Open PhD Positions in the Database and Information Systems Group of KIT
The Database and Information Systems Group at the Computer-Science Department of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) has several openings for
PhD Research Assistants (TV-L E13, full-time)
These positions are available to applicants with a graduate degree (master degree or diploma) in Computer Science or related fields like Mathematics or Physics, and with an interest in database systems.
The objectives of the open positions are to conduct research on the topics of stream mining, data anonymization, or analysis of business processes. There is considerable freedom when it comes to the concrete definition of the PhD projects, both regarding content and methodology.
The positions are attractive because of the high quality of the scientific supervision and the extremely good working atmosphere, as assessed by alumni of the group. Opportunities for collaboration are excellent, be it within computer science, be it with other disciplines, be it with interesting industrial partners in the technology region around Karlsruhe. The DBIS group currently has a dozen PhD and 4 postdoctoral researchers. There is a wide range of projects and excellent facilities. For more details on the group and its work see
http://dbis.ipd.kit.edu/
According to many sources, KIT is one of the leading research institutions worldwide, and the standing of its computer-science department is excellent as well. KIT is the result of the merger of the University of Karlsruhe and the Research Center Karlsruhe. It is a unique institution in Germany in the sense that it combines the mission of a university with that of a large-scale research center. The work environment is an international one, with many students and researchers coming from abroad.
Karlsruhe is a very pleasant city in the South-West of Germany. The location of KIT is unique in the sense that its campus is adjacent to Karlsruhe Palace, its spacious park and green forests as well as the city center at the same time. Karlsruhe is ideally located both from a recreational perspective -- it is located in the lively German region of Baden, and the Black Forest as well as the enjoyable French region of Alsace are nearby -- and from an infrastructure perspective. For instance, there is a regular direct train connection to Paris, and Frankfurt airport as well as other airports with good connections can be conveniently reached.
Candidates should be highly motivated, have good analytical and technical skills, be good speakers and writers and be able to work in teams. Good oral and written English skills are expected, knowledge in German is not required.
KIT is committed to increasing the share of women in research and especially encourages female candidates to apply. Handicapped applicants will have higher preference in case of equal qualifications. Review of applications will start immediately and will continue until the positions are filled. The positions will be awarded for a period of three years.
